At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is, in area, by far the largest country in the world, covering more than an eighth of the Earth’s land area. It is 2.2 times larger than Australia and 0.7 million kilometers larger than South America. Russia has the world's largest reserves of mineral and energy resources.

Language:
Russian is a Slavic language in the Indo-European family. It is one of the other two national languages in the East Slavic group, which are Ukrainian and Belarusian. Russian is classified as a level III language in terms of learning difficulty.
Statistically, there are 160 ethnic groups in Russia, speaking 100 different languages.

Population: Russia has the population of 145,166,731 people with 4,661,219 living in St. Petersburg. The ethnic composition of the country includes 84.72% Russians, 1.87% Ukrainians, 1.17% Belarusians, 0.78% Jewish, 0.76% Tatars, 0.41% Armenians, 0.36% Azerbaijani, 0.22% Georgians, 0.13% Chuvashes, 0.10% Poles, and many other smaller ethnic groups.
Area: 17,075,400 square kilometres with lakes containing approximately one-quarter of the world's unfrozen fresh water.

Time zone:
The Russian Federation spans 11 time zones, from the second to the twelfth (UTC+2 to UTC+12). Twice a year Russia goes on Daylight Saving Time. The changeover dates in Russia are the same as for other European countries, but clocks are moved forward or back at 02:00 local time in all zones. On the day before the last Sunday in March clocks are moved one hour forward, and on the day before the last Sunday in October clocks are moved one hour back. The two hours of Daylight Saving Time significantly extend daylight during waking hours.
Electric power: Electrical current in Russia is 220 volts, 50Hz. Round two-pin plugs are standard.
Currency: Ruble (RUB). The ruble is subdivided into 100 kopeks.
Exchange: Foreign currency can be easily exchanged at uathorized banks and exchange offices. Exchange offices are numerous and easy to locate.

Weather: The weather conditions across Russia vary with both distances and seasons. It is true to say, though, that December, January and February tend to be the coldest months with temperatures at least a few degrees below zero all over the territory of Russia. The central part of the country gets from 10 to 15 Cº most of the time.
